Industry Insights and Innovations

The event featured a wide range of presentations and panels. Here are just a few highlights from this year’s conference:

Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASCs) Are the Future

Dr. Scott Sigman and Zimmer Biomet CEO Ivan Tornos shared their perspectives on the growing role of ASCs in the healthcare ecosystem. Tornos noted that 20% of Zimmer Biomet’s business is already in ASCs, with expectations for that number to grow to 40–60%. Dr. Sigman emphasized that ASCs help reduce infection rates by keeping orthopedic patients separate from general hospital populations. As hospitals evolve to focus more on critical and complex care, ASCs are positioned to play a key role in outpatient procedures.

Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA)

Rebecca Seidel of Medtronic highlighted advancements in PFA, a promising technique in cardiac ablation. Medtronic's solution offers a dual-mode catheter that allows clinicians to switch between PFA and radiofrequency ablation during a procedure, enhancing precision and flexibility. While PFA isn’t yet available in ASC settings, Seidel expressed confidence that this will change as technology and adoption evolve.

Artificial Intelligence in Medical Diagnostics

Boston Scientific’s Julie Thompson and Dennis Cheng discussed the integration of AI into diagnostic tools. They outlined the challenge of managing overwhelming volumes of patient data and the need to tailor data delivery to individual cases. Their team is working on ways to collect and analyze data that help physicians make clearer, faster decisions with more patient-specific insight.

Other sessions delved into cutting-edge topics like neuromodulation, electroconvulsive therapy, and surgical robotics, particularly the use of robots in heart valve repair and endovascular surgery.
